HPT vs. CHT: Which Patient Transport Credential Do You Need?

Both programs support patient transporters, but they serve different stages. HPT is an online certificate for foundational learning. CHT is a national professional credential for working transporters, with training and competency validated in the hospital.

Choose based on where you are now: start with HPT if you are new to patient transport or want an online foundation; explore CHT if you work in a hospital transport department and can complete its instructor-led pathway.

HPT and CHT are distinct programs, not interchangeable credentials. HPT provides online foundational learning; CHT validates applied competency through a hospital instructor-led process. Follow your employer’s requirements for role qualifications and local practice.

Still deciding?

If you are not yet working in patient transport, start with HPT. If you are already on a hospital transport team, review the CHT requirements and ask your supervisor about access to a certified instructor.
