The path

Six steps to the credential

Start in patient transport

CHT is earned by working transporters. Not in the field yet? Build the technical foundation first with the entry-level HPT certificate, earned entirely online — it strengthens your applications for transport roles.

Enroll through your hospital's certified instructor

CHT is delivered in-house by a Certified Healthcare Transporter Instructor (CHTI) — one of your own leaders, certified to teach the endorsed curriculum. If your hospital doesn't have a CHTI yet, share the employer page with your manager.

Complete the three CHT courses

CHT-1 Technical Skills — equipment, safety, patient handling, CPR. CHT-2 CHOICES Ethics — the behaviors and judgment that make performance consistent. CHT-3 Strategic Skill Building — decision-making and accountability under pressure.

Demonstrate competency on the job

Your instructor validates your proficiency in real transport work. This is what separates CHT from online-only certificates: the credential certifies what you can actually do.

Pass the exam

Complete the CHT-1 exam and all course requirements under your instructor's supervision.

Receive your national credential

Impact Training Company reviews your file and issues the CHT credential — portable across employers and verifiable in the national registry.

Common questions

Before you enroll

How long does certification take?

Timing depends on your hospital's training schedule — courses are delivered in-house by your certified instructor alongside your regular work, combining classroom instruction, workplace application, and competency validation.

Do I need experience first?

CHT is designed for working transporters, with competency validated on the job. If you're not in transport yet, start with the online HPT certificate.

What if my hospital has no CHT instructor?

Ask your transport manager to review the implementation pathway. A leader from your department earns the CHTI credential — next virtual cohort September 15–16, 2026 — then certifies your whole team in-house.

Does the credential transfer between employers?

Yes. CHT is a portable national credential recorded in the registry — it follows you across hospitals and any employer can verify it.
